Discovery Channel SchoolOutstanding middle school program available to teachers

The Get Charged! Electricity and You program provides – free of charge – high quality, content-rich educational materials – including interactive CD-ROMs, teachers resource guides, educational videos, student study guides and other collateral materials – to augment the existing core science curriculum at middle schools that includes the study of electricity. Middle schools in Citrus, Lake, Marion, Sumter, Levy, Pasco, and Hernando counties that are part of Sumter Electric Cooperative’s service territory are eligible to participate in the innovative program.

The Get Charged! program was developed by the award-winning Discovery Channel School and the educational content is based, in part, on high-quality programming from the Discovery Channel. It is intended to help students gain a real-world understanding of electricity, what electric power is, how it works, and how to use it safely.

The dearth of resources for school districts around the U.S., and right here in Florida, is well-known. By being a part of the large network of Touchstone Energy cooperatives, SECO is able to bring the collective resources of these 600 not-for-profit electric utilities to bear on behalf of our community in a way that would not be possible otherwise. We are very excited about this new program and we are sure area educators and students will be, as well. This new Touchstone Energy/Discovery program is an excellent way to provide much needed educational materials to local school districts. The core content successfully addresses National Science Education Standards and standards of the National Council for Social Studies. It’s a truly outstanding educational tool. SECO offers middle schools in SECO’s service territory the option of participating in the program. Educators can get additional information by contacting SECO's corporate communications office at (352)793-3801, extension 1109.
